Spectre Law (“Spectre Law,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) is committed to protecting the personal information of every person who visits this website or contacts our firm. This Privacy Policy describes what personal information we collect, how we use and disclose it, how we keep it secure, and the rights you have under applicable Canadian privacy law, including British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
1. What this policy applies to
This policy applies to personal information collected through this website, including any contact, consultation, or inquiry forms, as well as personal information you provide to us by phone, email, or in person in connection with your inquiry or your matter.
2. Information we collect
We collect personal information that you provide to us directly, including:
- Your full name
- Phone number
- Email address
- Information you describe in the message field of our contact form
- Any additional information you choose to share with us about your matter
We may also collect limited technical information automatically when you visit our website, including the page you arrived from, your approximate location at the region level, and standard server log information. We do not use cookies that track you across other websites and do not knowingly collect information from children under the age of 13.
3. Why we collect it
We collect personal information to:
- Respond to your inquiry and follow up with you
- Provide legal services if you choose to retain our firm
- Communicate with you about your file
- Comply with our professional obligations under the Law Society of British Columbia’s Code of Professional Conduct, including conflict checks and client identification
- Maintain firm records as required by law
- Improve the website and the quality of our services
4. Consent
By submitting a form on this website, calling us, or emailing us, you consent to our collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information for the purposes described in this policy. You may withdraw your consent at any time by contacting our Privacy Officer (see Section 11), subject to legal or contractual restrictions and reasonable notice. Withdrawing consent may affect our ability to continue providing services to you.
5. How we disclose information
We do not sell your personal information. We disclose personal information only:
- To service providers who help us operate the firm (for example, our customer relationship management platform, email provider, and IT support), each of whom is bound by confidentiality obligations
- To other parties as required to complete your transaction (for example, the BC Land Title Office, lenders, real estate agents, or opposing counsel)
- As required or permitted by law, court order, or by a regulator
- With your express consent for any other purpose
Some of our service providers may store information on servers located outside British Columbia or outside Canada. Where this is the case, the information may be subject to the laws of those jurisdictions, including lawful access by foreign government authorities. We take reasonable steps to ensure that any third party who handles personal information on our behalf provides appropriate protection.
6. Storage, retention, and security
We protect personal information using physical, organizational, and technological safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information, including secured storage, access controls, and encryption in transit. We retain personal information only as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy or as required by the Law Society of British Columbia’s record retention rules and applicable law. When personal information is no longer required, it is securely destroyed or anonymized.
7. Solicitor and client privilege
Information you share with us when seeking or receiving legal advice is generally protected by solicitor and client privilege. Submitting a form on this website, calling us, or emailing us does not by itself create a lawyer and client relationship. A lawyer and client relationship is formed only when we accept a retainer in writing. Until that point, please do not send us confidential or time sensitive information.
8. Cookies and analytics
This website uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, a privacy respecting analytics service that does not set tracking cookies and does not collect personally identifiable information. It records aggregate page view counts, referrers, and performance metrics. We may add additional analytics in the future and will update this policy to describe what is collected.
9. Your rights
Under PIPA and PIPEDA you have the right to:
- Request access to the personal information we hold about you
- Request correction of personal information that is inaccurate or incomplete
- Withdraw your consent to our collection, use, or disclosure of your personal information, subject to legal or contractual restrictions
- Make a complaint about our handling of your personal information
We will respond to access and correction requests within 30 days, as required by PIPA. We may charge a reasonable fee for access requests in accordance with the law.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page indicates when the policy was most recently revised. Material changes will be communicated through a notice on this website.
